Bob Gibson was a gifted athlete and intimidating moundsman who pitched all 17 of his big league seasons in a Cardinals uniform.
A Harlem Globetrotter prior to beginning his Hall of Fame pitching career with St. Louis, Gibson was a two-time World Series MVP and became just the second pitcher in MLB history to strike out 3,000 batters (he K'd 3,117 in the regular season and another 92 in nine World Series starts). The brushback pitch was a key one in his arsenal, which the Redbird right-hander utilized to win the most games in team history. His 1.12 ERA in 1968 is the best ever by a National League pitcher. Thirteen years later he was a first-ballot inductee at baseball's shrine in Cooperstown.
Gibson's greatness was derived from a distinctive all out pitching motion that is seen in this photo, which specifically captures his trademark follow-through at Busch Stadium in the beginning of its artificial turf era. The 8" x 10" color photo is double matted and centered within a 12" x 14" wood frame that comes ready to hang.
