Texas Rangers - The Ballpark
It was a sight to behold at the Majors' only fully enclosed retro ballpark on its Opening Day in 2002. Before nearly 50,000 folks, the hometown Texas Rangers were getting ready to play the Anaheim Angels when this panorama photo was taken. What it shows is the patriotic pageantry of Opening Day and the ballpark at its finest. The Rangers are lined up on the first base line, the Angels on third, and members of the U.S. Naval Recruiting District in Dallas are holding American flags around the perimeter of the infield. The University of Texas marching band is in center field, a large flag unfurled on the grass berm behind them, and they had just finished playing the National Anthem when two B-1 bombers flew over the ballpark. The clarity of this print is so clear that you can see the jets on their approach above the covered pavilion porch in right field as fans, and even the umpires, look skyward.
The Rangers' Ballpark in Arlington is full of classic touches - the aforementioned home run porch, the giant billboards above the office complex in center, and the white steel frieze hanging from the facade of the upper deck. This poster vividly captures all of those details on one of the most memorable days in The Ballpark's history.
